Our Club

"A perfect place for trying something new"
Sion Edwards, Coach

A brief history

Reading Rooks was officially founded in September 2019, by a group of people who realised the need for more korfball clubs in the South of England, and – with the Reading University Club already well-established in the town –  Reading seemed like an ideal breeding ground for a new korfball club.

Reading Rooks started with little over ten members, and fielded a single team playing in the Oxfordshire Korfball Association, and played their matches out of the Madejski Academy in Reading, using equipment borrowed from Harrow Vultrix.

Nowadays, our club counts more than 50 members, 4 successful league teams, and an unmatched drive to grow and nurture the club to new heights.

Our vision for the club

Over the next five years, Reading Rooks aims to grow into a leading korfball club in the South of England.

Our vision is to develop a sustainable player pathway from beginner to the highest level within the club.

We want to foster an inclusive and competitive environment, and strengthen our presence both locally and regionally.

We aspire to expand membership, increase coaching capacity, and compete consistently at higher league levels while maintaining our welcoming, team-first culture.

By building strong local partnerships and raising the club’s profile, we hope to ensure long-term success on and off the court.

Our key objectives

1.Grow Membership
Implement consistent recruitment drives (schools, local events, and adult leagues) to sustainably support four active teams across all levels.

2.Team Progression
Target promotion of the first team to regional level, while developing the second and third teams to perform at the top of local league competition.

3.Club-Wide Playing Identity
Establish a shared coaching framework focused on versatile, all-role korfball — every player learns to attack, defend, and support fluidly.

4.Develop Coaching Capacity
Invest in coach education to ensure consistent delivery across all teams and support player development at every level.

5.Club Culture & Community
Foster a strong, inclusive culture through social events, clear club values, and active volunteer engagement.

6.Collaboration with University Team
Work closely with the Reading University Korfball Club to grow the sport locally, support student transition into adult play, and build a shared talent pool.

7.Regional Engagement
Actively engage with the wider korfball community via the Southern Counties Korfball Association, with the aim of becoming a strong regional hub for the sport.
