FAQ for girls team sports in Reading

Do I need to be sporty or fit already?

No. Korfball welcomes complete beginners and improves your fitness as you go — it's a great way to build fitness through a fun, sociable sport rather than the gym alone.

Will I actually get to play, or just watch the men?

You'll play every bit as much as the men on your team. The format is strictly 4 women and 4 men on court at all times, so your involvement is guaranteed by the rules of the sport itself, not down to chance. Also, Rooks' policy is that when you show up for a match, you'll always play!

Is korfball a contact sport?

Korfball is a "controlled contact" sport. Defending is about positioning and blocking the shot, not direct physical contact, which many women find makes it more welcoming than sports where size and strength dominate.

I haven't played team sport since school, is that a problem?

Not at all. Many of our women in our club are returning to sport for the first time in years, and taster sessions exist precisely so you can ease back in with zero pressure.

What age do you need to be?

Reading Rooks caters for adult players; get in touch via our Contact page if you're enquiring on behalf of a younger player and we can point you toward the right pathway.
